A bank examiner is a financial professional, a species of auditor, who has the task of making sure that banks, savings and loans, credit unions and similar financial institutions, and their branches, are operating legally and ethically, in accordance with the standards imposed on these institutions by the chartering level of government. In the United States, they may work for state governments, for a United States government agency, or for the Federal Reserve Bank; or may be employed by the institutions themselves as internal auditors.
